Subject: Wikileaks-What is all the fuss about?
We, Pakistanis are a very funny Nation, we all know how corrupt and dirty Zardari is, we all know how hypocritically dangerous Mr Sharif is, we also know that US interests in Pakistan are mainly its rich uranium reserves but we are all feigning innocence on the revelations of the cables released by Wikileaks. It is not surprise, it's just a confirmation of what we all suspected.
According to the Independent report: ""
"The diplomatic cables only serve to confirm what people have been worried about, especially in regard to the US fears about our nuclear assets."
U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks make perfectly clear and straighten out Pakistan's civil military relations, exposes various political conspiracies, the power of its army, it's role in politics and alleged human rights abuses. It illustrates the supremacy of our unrepresentative institutions and control over representative institutions. It also confirms the undemocratic intentions of various political stakeholders, unmasks especially those behind the scene characters who are calling the shots? So, WikiLeaks documents confirm what we, as a nation, already know.
According to Wikileaks:
Since 2007, the United States has mounted a highly secret effort, to remove from a Pakistani research reactor highly enriched uranium that American officials fear could be diverted for use in an illicit nuclear device. In May 2009, Ambassador Anne W. Patterson reported that Pakistan was refusing to schedule a visit by American technical experts because, as a Pakistani official said, "if the local media got word of the fuel removal, 'they certainly would portray it as the United States taking Pakistan's nuclear weapons,' he argued."
Wikileaks also revealed that in July 2009, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Muhammed bin Zayed, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE armed forces and de facto defence chief, said Zardari was "dirty but not dangerous" and Nawaz Sharif was "dangerous but not dirty".
The leaked documents revealed that Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz speaking about President Asif Zardari, called him the biggest obstacle to Pakistan's progress. "When the head is rotten, it affects the whole body," it quoted him as saying.
US has adopted a carrot and stick policy. In one of the cables, former US ambassador to Pakistan, Anne Patterson, wrote that "there is no chance that Pakistan will view enhanced assistance…as sufficient compensation for abandoning support to terrorist and extremist groups".
When transparency international revealed our corruption our leaders called it a conspiracy against our country and declared the agency as biased and harmful. Now they are condemning the cables released by Wikileaks, demanding a ban on the website. They call it a conspiracy and claim that these revelations would not harm any diplomatic relations with UAE or US. They just need to realize that the truth will be eventually come out one way or the other. All kinds of corruption cannot be just brushed aside as a conspiracy.
These revelations or secrets, whatever we call them might not affect our diplomatic relationships but they certainly hurt the economy and its people. Rather than attacking the institutions articulating already negative perceptions, the government needs to address the main issue- CORRUPTION. We should stop worrying about how people perceive us and start worrying about how we do our business, which at present is poor and clique driven. That's what we need to change.
